Jean Scheid Obituary

Jean M. Scheid, born 93 years ago, died peacefully Friday, Sept 7, 2018 at Presbyterian Senior Care, with her youngest daughter at her side. Jean was the beloved wife of the late surgeon, Dr. John (Jack) Scheid. She was born and raised in Duquesne, PA, to the late EJ and "Mid” Schorr. There she attended Duquesne High School and St.Joseph's Church. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1946, a psychology major and a TriDeIt. She met her husband, "Jack" Scheid of Brackenridge, PA., when he was an intern, married him in 1947 and lived with him in Philadelphia, Cleveland, New York and Johnson City, TN before settling back into the Allegheny Valley to begin his surgical practice in 1954. He died in 1989.

Jean was a stay at home mother who was devoted to her 3 children and her husband's career and was active in the Allegheny Valley community. For 20 years she was a member of the Allegheny Valley Hospital auxiliary, serving terms as president and chairwoman of many committees and working for 45 years in the hospital gift shop. She also served on the People's Library board in Lower Burrell for 20 years. She was a fabulous dancer and taught our father how to dance on their first date at Kennywood. She was a keen bridge player, an avid reader, and an active member of the Tarentum Book Club for many years. She enjoyed standards and musical theatre. She is remembered as always having music on when her kids came home from school. Jean supported many greater Pittsburgh cultural institutions: Phipps Conservatory, the Frick, The Pittsburgh Symphony, CLO and Heinz History Center.

Jean had exquisite taste and style, good manners and an exacting sense of propriety and individual and family responsibility. She was a letter writer par excellence and all of her children and grandchildren have examples of her epistolary dedication. She traveled extensively with her children and grandchildren and was present for most of her grandchildren's life events. She lived independently for 46 years in the Lower Burrell home she built with her husband.   At age 89, her children Jennifer, Jeff and Laurie all took part in her care, with Laurie moving back home to be her main caregiver At age 91, she moved into Westminster Place of Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont, PA. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by both of her siblings, Elmer (Bud) Schorr and Lois Schorr Finley. She is survived by her children: Jennifer (Sandy) Williams, Jeff (Holly) Scheid, Laurie Scheid; 7 grandchildren- Molly Williams Pugh (Bill), Nicholas Williams (Kate), Owen Williams (Gracen), Evan Scheid, Jon Scheid, Emmalee Scheid and Rhiannon Kirshner plus 3 great grandchildren: Meredith and Alwen Pugh and Uma Williams. She is also survived by 6 nieces and nephews and one brother in law. The family would like to thank Presbyterian Home, Heartland Hospice, and the caregivers of Care At Home, especially Star McNalley.
