William Joseph “Bill” Powell, 97, of Upper Burrell, died Friday, February 9, 2018 in the VA Health System in Oakland. He was born October 22, 1920 in New Kensington, son of the late Joseph C. and Frances (Fritz) Powell. Bill was a lifelong resident of Upper Burrell and a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance and Lower Burrell Baptist Churches. He worked at American Saint Gobain Glass Company for over 20 years, followed by a career in the Laborers Construction Union. Bill was the oldest lifelong member of the Upper Burrell Volunteer Fire Department. Bill was proud Army veteran, having served his country in WWII. He loved and prayed for his family and his family loved and prayed for him. He was a believer in Jesus Christ and is at home in heaven with his lord and his beloved wife Helen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Marie (Fick) Powell; brothers, Marlin “Bud” Powell and John “Virg” Powell; and sisters, Peg Strate and Lenora Zerisky. Survivors include his daughter, Janis (Mike) Phelps of Lebanon, Ohio; sons, Darryl C. (Marianne) Powell of Saxonburg; Dane W. (Carrie) Powell of Saxonburg; Gary M. (Susan) Powell of Tarentum; 8 grandchildren, Shawn Pastrick, Nick Phelps, Josie O'Shea, Shelley Roenigk, Ryan Powell, Sara Powell, Daniel Powell, and Laurel Powell; 6 great grandchildren, Mathew Phelps, Mathias Phelps, Savanah O'Shea, Scarlett O'Shea, Matt Roenigk and Joey Roenigk; sisters, Marylou Adams of Upper Burrell; Norma (Jim) Ryba of Lower Burrell; Caroline (Richard) Emmert of Upper Burrell; Virginia Johnston of Sarver; brother, Clifford Powell of Lower Burrell; and his great neighbors and Church family. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Michael Mummert of the Lower Burrell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell. Members of the Upper Burrell Fire Dept. will hold a service at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Members of the Lower Burrell American Legion will hold a service at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
