Arthur J Scherf

Arthur James Scherf, 89, of Lower Burrell, passed away at Good Samaritan Hospice on Friday, October 8, 2021 surrounded by family.
 
Arthur enjoyed a long career as a Division Manager at Oberg Carbide Punch & Die after his service in the Korean War where he earned the Bronze Star as a Sergeant First Class. Upon his retirement, he spent much of his time gardening and cutting the grass, driving his wife to the mall, and celebrating every holiday, minor and major, with his family.  He shared many memories of hunting and fishing trips with family, lessons he learned growing up when times were very tight, and his wonderful life with “his girls,” his wife Corrine, and his daughters “Lanie and Janie.”
 
 He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen Corrine Scherf, his parents Arthur Otto and Bessie Scherf, and siblings Kenny, Hilda, and Dorothy.  He is survived by his children, Elaine and Ron Stirland of Belle Vernon, PA, Jayne and Dave Prelosky of Lower Burrell.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, in whom he took great pride and much joy: Matthew and Marcie Stirland, of Natrona Heights, PA, Leslie and Eric Backos, of Fayette City, PA, Allison Prelosky-Leeson and Evan Leeson, of Shaker Heights, OH and Kimberly Prelosky and Alex Medice of Pittsburgh, PA.  He also took immense joy in his two great-grand children, Rayna Elanie Backos and Daniel James Leeson.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Frank F. Gigler Funeral Home, Inc.,  Robert P. Karish, Supervisor, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell (724) 335-6500.  Services will be held at The Grace Community Presbyterian Church, 2751 Grant St., Lower Burrell,  on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (Everyone please meet at church) with the Rev. Doug Marshall.  Internment will follow at the Greenwood Memorial Park with military honors.  Masks will be required.  Condolences are welcome at www.giglerfuneralhome.com.
