Laura (Verner) Such

Laura Grace (Verner) Such, aged 103 years and 7 months, of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, went to meet her maker while at her home surrounded by close family, Saturday, 13 January 2024. Laura was born 25 May 1920 at Valley Heights and was a long-time resident of Westmoreland County. She grew up on her parents’ farm on Turkey Ridge where her primary chore was helping her father manage the plow horses, perhaps that is where she developed her long gait.

For the last 68 years Laura resided in Lower Burrell along with her husband, John E. (aka Ed or Red) Such who preceded her in death in 2005. Both were members of Puckety Presbyterian Church where Laura served as Deacon and Elder and a founding and sustaining member of Meals on Wheels. During WWII she was employed by Alcoa Aluminum where she supported the war effort riveting canisters for military supplies. In later years, Laura served in Burrell High School cafeteria all the while performing the duties of home maker, wife, and mother.

Laura was the eighth in a line of fourteen (14) siblings, the children of John Taylor Verner and Vallie Lena (McGinnis) Verner, all of whom preceded her in passing. Her siblings were: sisters Gladys Weston, Frances McNeal, Ruth McNutt, Sarah Bolt, Lois Verner, Velma (Jane) Diven, and Doris Spinks; brothers George, Robert, Gilbert (Gib), Reed (Barney), Zenith, and Walter.

Surviving Laura are: daughters Rose L. Harkey and husband Jamie Geltz of Sanford FL, and Patricia A. Koessler of Lower Burrell PA; sons John E. Such Jr. and wife Sally (Schumann) of Surprise AZ, and James H. Such and wife Christel (Landry) of The Colony TX. Her grandchildren number eleven (11), great-grandchildren number twenty-three (23), and lastly, great-great grandchildren number ten (10). She also has numerous nieces and nephews located throughout the country.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on THURSDAY, 18 January 2024 at the Frank F. Gigler Funeral Home, Inc., Robert P. Karish, Supervisor, 2877 Leechburg Rd. Lower Burrell where the funeral service will be held on FRIDAY at 11 a.m. with Pastor Brian Kilbert officiating.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Meals on Wheels, 1009 Puckety Church Road, Lower Burrell, PA, 15068, < Meals on Wheels America>.
