Merritt Jacob Hummel, 92, of Lower Burrell, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017, in Allegheny Valley Hospital. He was born February 11, 1925 in Auburn in Schuylkill County, son of the late H. Roy and Sadie (Herring) Hummel. He graduated in 1943 from Har Brack High school and attended California and Penn State colleges. Merritt worked for the PPG Research Laboratory for 35 years as a Glass Technologist, retiring in February 1984 in the position of Senior Research Associate. He was the author of six patents for PPG and in 1956 he received the R. B. Tucker Award. Merritt was married on September 16, 1950 to Dorothy Jane Harbison, who after 53 years of marriage, died October 24, 2003. He proudly served as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Corp from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lower Burrell.  Survivors include his daughter, Cathy Jane (Sam) Turco and his son, Kenneth Merritt (Barbara DeWitt) Hummel; grandchildren, Jason (Sara Kinney) Turco; Joseph (Bonnie Bohannan) Turco; Michael (Nicole Furth) Hummel; Matthew (Courtney Rambo) Hummel and Seth (Suzanne Hartwick) Hummel; great grandchildren, Luke, Olivia and Leah Turco; Nicholas and Anna Sofia Turco; Hannah, Aliah, Noah, and Jaden Hummel; Alex, Emmitt and Gabrielle Hummel. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul, Ruth (Heffner), Lynn, Stanley, Harold, Catherine, Henry and Bruce. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068. Funeral services, with Pastor Elaine Hower officiating, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lower Burrell. Everyone please meet at the church. Private burial in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell. Everyone is cordially invited to attend a luncheon in the church immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3084 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068.
